In 1978, CBS producers asked Waylon Jennings to come up with a theme song that would explain The Dukes of Hazzard. Waylon had already narrated the “Moonrunners” movie, as well as the Dukes of Hazzard pilot episode at this point, so he understood the heart of the show. Waylon penned the “Good ol’ Boys” theme in short order, creating one of the best-known and best-loved show themes in television history. When it was released to radio in 1980, “Good ol’ Boys” flew to #1 on the Billboard country music chart. It reached #21 on the pop chart, and stayed in airplay rotation for several months. The song propelled Waylon into superstar status, and became a cornerstone of his legacy.
